A Changed Heart

Kim’s Journey

Thankful November 26, 2008

Tomorrow is the day we are “officially” to be thankful, but we should be thankful every day (like you really didn’t know that)  A few quotes that I have collected over the years……..

You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late  (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch heaven (Johannes A. Gaertner)

If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul  (Rabbi Harold Kushner)

Things turn out best for people who make the best of the way things turn out (John Wooden)

The unthankful heart…..discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day, and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly belssings!  (Henry Ward Beecher)

and………..an unknown quote……..

If you haven’t all the things you want, be grateful for the things you don’t have that you wouldn’t want.

Happy Thanksgiving friends.

Merry-go-round November 22, 2008

You know how it goes…you have been there too.  Everything around you is spinning faster than you can keep up with it.  You work and work and keep getting further behind.  This one wants this…that one wants that…you are being pulled from all directions.  You meet yourself coming and going.  Which way do you go?  What do you do?   I too often try to be all things to all people and sometimes it is just overwhelming….the merry-go-round of life.  I just want to jump off this ride for a while.  But that can’t happen.  Work lady, wife lady, mom lady, church lady…which one wins out this week?  I brought home a stack of work from the office for the weekend, if I do that, the house won’t get cleaned, if i clean, my office work won’t be done.  If I do my Bible study, work AND house stuff isn’t done.  What do you do to be successful at all of those?  I need to be more Mary than Martha.  Sit at the feet of Jesus, but then that means work doesn’t get done….and that puts me on the merry-go-round again.  Whew…..anyone dizzy besides me?

So hard to believe.  My youngest will be 27 tomorrow, don’t blink ladies…it goes way too fast.  It seems like yesterday he was graduating from pre-school in his white pants and plaid jacket reciting his “I Want to be a Banker”.  His blonde hair in a mullet (haha – he hates that picture!)  Or was it yesterday I was sitting at the Greenville Park Ampitheatre watching him get his first t-ball award, or maybe the Little League game he made an unassisted triple play.   Wait, maybe it was 6th grade graduation when I took 30 pictures of him in his new suit and wire-rimmed glasses (oh wait, no film in the camera).  Oh…I remember…it was the first high school golf match when the golf bag was bigger than him and he beat all the guys twice his size.  It was just yesterday he was pitching a no-hitter or winning that regional game, or was I watching him receive his All-State award from golf pro Russ Cochran.  Oh…. I think it was yesterday he graduated high school – top of his class.  No wait, my memory is better now, he is playing in College Golf Nationals in Albequerque NM (5th place) or Palm Coast FL and getting that college regional win.  Oh, there he is coaching the local high school baseball team.  No, I remember now, it was Monday night  and he was coaching basketball with his first teaching position.  Blink.  Blink.  All I know is that all these seem like yesterday.  I have been through 7 different graduations, 4 sports, umpteen awards, girlfriends and breakups, and I love him more every day and everything seems like it went by way too quick.  Cherish your little ones because before you know it they will be 27 too!  Here are pictures of our dinner tonight.  My beautiful daughter and my son.  We came in 3 cars and at the end of the dinner went 3 different ways.  I miss all the days that seemed like they were just yesterday.  Blink..blink..there went more time.

Well, I know that is normally for Campbell’s Soup, but I don’t know how else to describe my Sonic Sweet Tea today.  I could also say “Good to the last drop” but that is Maxwell House Coffee, but I am savoring every last sip.  Our Biggest Loser contest at work ended today.  As a group we lost 89 pounds which I think is awesome.  Those of us who stuck out the full 8 weeks decided that we would continue with the weekly weigh-ins to help hold us accountable, so my sweet tea will be short lived, but an occasional treat for myself.  I have changed my eating habits (like nothing after supper) and resolve to continue that.  But for today I will enjoy this Route 44 (Yes…….the largest tea Sonic sells) until it is empty, and maybe even eat that lunch size bag of potato chips with my turkey sandwich, but tomorrow is another day.  (oops…is that Scarlett still with me?)

So, I will toot my own horn for a minute.  Indulge me.  I was just a little short of averaging a weight loss of 2 pounds a week, so almost 16 pounds for the contest.  I came in 2nd.  I am back into pants I couldn’t wear in September, tops are not as tight as they were and at the peak of my exercising (before I hurt my back exercising Sunday night) I was making 60 laps around the gym at church.  Of those 60 laps, I would run 10-15.  I plan to continue walking and hope to do the exercises again when the back allows.  No crash diets, no laxatives, nothing but watching how much I was eating and exercising.  A healthy adjustment.  Thank all of you for the encouragement…….keep it up……..the holidays are upon us!

Now I must go and sip the remainder of my tea.  Mmm….Mmm….good.

Well, only one more week to go in our Biggest Loser contest at work.  They didn’t give us results today, but I think I am stuck in 2nd place, and I am not sure I can overtake the leader.  I lost another 2 lbs this week.  But the leader will have to gain weight next week and I will have to lose double my weekly pace for me to catch her – I think.  But still, I have lost 13 lbs. and that is a good thing and my eating habit are much better.  But, I will say–next Thursday after work–don’t get in my way as I go to Sonic for a large sweet tea!!  That is my one reward I am allowing.  I can’t wait!!!!!!!

Well, this is the day the Lord hath made.  Either way the vote goes – Americans have made a historic decision.  I hope each of you prayed for the right choice then exercised your right to vote.  My neice turned 18 today and got to vote in this major election on her birthday.  How cool is that?  TV is projecting McCain won Kentucky.  McConnell and Lundsford too close to call.  It will be an interesting night.

Ever year for Treats and More (a Halloween alternative sponsored by our church) my husband and I have the honor of being a walking advertisement for our daughter and son-in-law’s costume store, Main Street Costumes.  We are always tickled for her to pick the “cream of the crop” of costumes for us and for one night a year act like kids again.  This year we were Scarlett and Rhett.  That is my favorite movie of all time and probably have seen it over 50 times.  What is your all-time favorite movie?
